Rafael dos SANTOS

 

(rdsantos@unicamp.br) started his studies at Fundação das Artes de São Caetano do Sul, where he was part of the first class together with José Eduardo Gramani and Marilia Pini, among others. He studied piano with Amilson Godoi, Pietro Maranca and later with Peter Feuchtwanger, in London, where he lived for four years. He holds a PhD in Music / Piano Performance from the University of Iowa - USA, under the guidance of Prof. Daniel Shapiro.

 

He is a collaborating professor at the PPG / Music Institute of Arts, UNICAMP, where he was a teacher for over 30 years and participated in the creation of the Bachelor's Degree program in Popular Music. He is coordinator of the research group “Popular Music: history, production and language” (CNPq) and co-editor, along with Martha Ulhoa (Unirio) and Adelcio Machado (UFSCAR) of the electronic magazine “Música Popular em Revista”, based at UNICAMP. He regularly acts as a soloist, arranger, composer and teacher.

 

He worked with several important artists in the international and Brazilian music scene, including singers Consiglia Latorre and Márcia Tauil, instrumentalists Vinícius Dorin, Nenê, Paulo Moura, Celso Almeida, Nivaldo Ornelas, Roberto Sion, Roberto Menescal, Paulo Sérgio Santos and Paulo Ronqui, and the groups Quatro a Zero and Quinteto Villa Lobos, as well as double bass player Tibô Delor (with whom he toured the Northeast with sponsorship from Petrobras), clarinet player Maurita Mead (with whom he has two albums recorded), composer John Rapson (USA) and violinist Takeshi Kobayashi (Japan). He has more than 10 recorded albums acting as a pianist and arranger.

 

He composed the soundtrack for five performances by the Campinas group “Confraria da Dança” formed by dancers Diane Ishimaru and Marcelo Rodrigues: Carta para não mandar, Brinquedos e inventos para dançar, Adverso (APCA award category dance for the author, Diane Ishimaru), Sem Fim and Mirabolante Carnaval
